Tomes, perfumes and Look 46
EVERY change of season brings with it a different mood and a need for hitting refresh on what’s in our immediate orbit of personal items. Deena’s penchant for reading continues and there are two tomes on her bedside table right now that are noteworthy; read on to unlock the compelling titles delighting D1st. While the fashion industry is still recovering from 4.5 weeks of ready-to-wear shows and ‘fashion flu’ (the unofficial ailment that editors suffer from after travelling from NYC through to Paris), there is just one runway look that’s made its way onto our wish-list. And, naturally, we’ve found some of life’s simple pleasures that’ll lift your mind, body, and soul.
Today, I’m reading…
Marlene Dietrich, The Life by Her Daughter Maria Riva, $11.99.
This book is the very definition of entertaining. It follows the life of Marlene Dietrich through the lens of her daughter and, therefore, it shares a startling amount of information and rich detail. The usual rules of celebrity gossip from way back when just don't apply anymore, and the world right now is so critical, people dare not put a foot wrong. This book weaves together untold history, with gossip, and delivers it with beautiful context.
One of my favourite images is in this book. It’s the cover of Marlene Dietrich on the August 1952 issue of Life Magazine. Ah, they don't make covers like that anymore!
I'm a fast reader (and a committed one - see proof here) but the difference nowadays as opposed to ten years ago is that I pause between a few chapters of great books, and let the narrative settle into my psyche. Before, I would not rest until I finished a book cover to cover. I guess we are all evolving but the core of us stays the same.
Tomorrow I’ll be reading… The Graydon Carter book that just came out and it is next on my reading list. When The Going Was Good: An Editor’s Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines by Graydon Carter, $32.
Perfume I'm wearing the most right now… Well, I am still committed to layering all of my usual fragrances, depending on my mood. But I’ve added a new one to the mix: Brunello Cucinelli, Sogno Notturno Eau de Parfum (100ml), $329. And the bottle is eternally chic.

The definitive looks from the March fashion shows that stayed with me are… It was a strange season in Paris this year and I found myself struggling to find signature looks that I coveted highly. However, the entire collection by Haider Ackermann for Tom Ford Fall 2025 is excellent. For me, Look 46 is the stand-out garment from the entire offering. This dress is the perfect marriage of elegance, modesty and contemporary cool. I can immediately imagine Tilda Swinton walking onto the red carpet in it. What’s so interesting about Ackermann’s work is that he can design for women of all shapes and heights, it’s as though his collections serve the entire spectrum of women. I couldn’t be more different to Tilda! She is statuesque and I’m shorter, well, without my super high stilettos on; but still, this look would work wonders on Tilda and me. I'm eyeing it up for my own closet.
This season the house of Dries Van Noten, now helmed for the first time by Creative Director Julian Klausner, also made me stop and pause. And Sarah Burton’s debut collection for Givenchy was the talk of Paris after the show and on-going. For good reason too! Burton reminded the entire industry and her loyal customer base that she is not running short of fresh concepts coupled with her mastery of tailoring.
In my beauty armoury, I’m highly rating:
#1: RŌZ, Evergreen Hair Styling Cream, $32.
#2: Danessa Myricks Beauty, Lightwork V I Am Palette, $161.
#3: Chanel, 1957 L’Huile, $333.
Top of my playlist is… It's been a minute! I usually trust the Apple Music algorithm, to a certain degree. There's simply too many songs to name but one, however… Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder) by Maxwell is a track that I will never get bored of.
